The chicory plant is a beautiful, blue-flowered perennial that’s been cultivated as far back as ancient Egypt. Originally used in tea and medicinal remedies, roasted chicory eventually became a warm drink enjoyed on its own and added to coffee across countries and cultures.
Historical Roots
Chicory root has been roasted, ground and mixed with coffee for more than 200 years. This combination — likely originating in Holland — was introduced to France around 1801. Sixty years later, the country was exporting more than 16 million pounds of chicory annually.
A New Orleans Ritual
By 1840, New Orleans was the second-largest importer of coffee in the United States. During wartime, this prized bean was much harder to find, so chicory root was used to stretch drinkers’ precious coffee a little further. Today, savoring a steaming cup of coffee with chicory, as well as brewed chicory in its pure form, are treasured local traditions in this iconic city.
